Джунгли, непроходимые и опасные, заселенные животными и насекомыми большими и маленькими, кишащие отвратительными тварями и прекрасными созданиями производят потрясающее впечатление на любого, даже самого черствого человека. Буйство красок, переизбыток растительности и экзотические животные поражают воображение. Не удивительно, что это утро началось полупрозрачным рассветом, обещающим новый яркий день. Вот уже во всю светит солнце, но почему такая тишина повисла над лесом? Не слышны бодрые голоса птиц, не рычит сердито чем-то потревоженный зверь, змеи попрятались, насекомых не видно, только кружат в воздухе хищные птицы. Что же случилось? Началась невиданная в этих краях засуха, сулящая смерть всему живому. Нет воды, засохли растения, гибнут звери, только пируют хищники. Жизнь замерла. Тихо и на стоянке первобытных людей - они тоже прячутся от палящего солнца. В одной из хижин мать делит воду между своими детьми. Люди живут запасами еды и питья, но строго их экономят. Вокруг стоянки на деревьях изнемогают от жары мартышки. Они ждут, может им перепадет что-нибудь с человеческого стола?
Вдруг все обезьяны встрепенулись - это ребенок вышел из хижины, держа в руке банан. Самая сообразительная и ловкая мартышка первой кинулась к вожделенному фрукту, вырвала его из рук малыша и побежала прочь от этого места. Устроившись удобнее на дереве, она собралась поесть: очистила банан и уже открыла рот, но не тут-то было. Огромная горилла заметила ее и, не в силах добраться до мартышки, стала дико реветь - ей тоже хотелось есть!
